Briggs specialises in delivering high-quality process engineering for the industry worldwide.

Second Generation Biofuel Pilot Facility

Location: Guildford, England

Scope: Overall process design and build of second generation pilot facility capable of handling a range of lignocellulosic feedstocks.

Briggs of Burton worked with TMO Renewables to design and build their Process Development Unit (PDU) to scale-up from current laboratory operations and also optimise a bioethanol process for the commercialisation of the technology. The PDU was designed to be capable of accepting a wide variety of raw material feed stocks to generate ethanol from fermentable sugars, and also included a smaller scale pilot “Scale-through” plant.

Baker’s Yeast and Yeast Extract Factory

Location: Harbin, China

Scope: Overall process design and build of new baker’s yeast and yeast extract factory in China.

Briggs of Burton were involved in the complete design and build of a new yeast production facility located in Harbin, China between 2008-2010. The yeast factory was designed to produce 60,000 Te/yr of ‘Y-30’ yeast cells, (approximately 15,000 Te/yr of yeast on a dry weight basis) using molasses as a feedstock.

The factory provides yeast to two other on site factories, including a yeast extract facility also built by Briggs of Burton and a bakers yeast drying plant for high activated-dried-yeast (HADY).

Hygienic Design and Cleaning In Place Consultancy

Briggs of Burton have supported a number of Biofuel production facilities around the world, providing consultancy on Hygienic Plant Design and Clean in Place. This has principally arisen due these production facilities not meeting their nameplate capacity, often due to Contractos from Oil and Gas developing these facilities and not appreciating good Hygienic Plant Design and CIP.

Briggs of Burton reviewed and recommend suitable improvements for existing Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) systems. The target during these consultations if for the plant is to achieve 100% of the original design capacity. Our hygienic process engineering expertise gained from decades working in the brewing, distilling, food, and pharmaceutical industries allows us to support clients with these challenges..

Yeast and Enzyme Propagation

Location: Brazil

Scope: Overall Process and Mechanical Design of Yeast and Enzyme Propagation systems for Second Generational Bioethanol facility.

Briggs of Burton were originally brought in as a consultant on hygienic design and CIP. Briggs of Burton’s scope of work expanded to the complete process and mechanical design of the Yeast and Enzyme Propagation Systems for a New Second Generation Bioethanol facility planned in Brazil.
