Turnkey Bourbon Whiskey Expansion Project

Client – Leading Bourbon Whiskey Producer

Location – Kentucky, USA

Scope – The leading Bourbon Whiskey producer has worked with the Briggs of Burton, Inc. team in Rochester, NY over the last 5 years to upgrade and expand their distilleries in the home of Bourbon, Kentucky, USA. Briggs have delivered the following projects and are now identified as a strategic partner for this client in North America –

  • Multiple Thermal Vapour Recompression (TVR) studies at 3 unique distilleries across North America
  • Front End Loading (FEL) 1 Design Study
  • Detailed Design and Equipment Supply
  • Utility Design, 3D Laser scanning, HAZOP, 5 Year Utility Plan and Commissioning
  • Turnkey implementation

Their overall expansion project in Kentucky, USA involved upgrading their existing site to increase spirits production over the next 5 years. The plant will increase capacity year by year upgrading systems and installing the required equipment and utilities to realise this growth.

The Briggs Inc team ensured that stage-gate commissioning was implemented at the latter end of the project to evaluate the initial phase but also ensure the design will accommodate for Clean in Place (CIP) and support their future expansion plans.

Distillery Equipment

  • Increase overall distillery production
  • Review of total distillery cooling water systems and capacities
  • Integrate a new Dona Tank #2 into the existing DONA system
  • Integrate new Dona Scale Tank for milled grist delivery to Dona Tank #2
  • Integrate a new Yeast Tank #3 into the existing Yeast propagation system
  • Integrate a new double Mash Cooker #4 into the existing 3 Mash Cooking system
  • Integrate a new Mash Cooler #2 into the existing system to give an 800 gpm cooling capacity through two mash coolers. The Mash Coolers to be supplied by two 150HP pumps at up to 200 psig
  • Integrate 9 new Fermenters into the existing system to take the number of FV’s to 34, with the capacity to add a further 9 Fermenters
  • The new Fermenter, Yeast and DONA vessel design was a huge change for the client as all the existing vessels have internal cooling coils where the new vessel design have external jackets.
  • Flush and CIP all Vessels and Pipework and supply of Briggs CIPR strainer
  • SIP all Vessels and Pipework
  • All new Wonderware Batch Sequence testing
  • Hazardous area classification and design for class 1, division 1
  • Full HAZOP of the design
  • Replace existing process pipework with new manifolds and hygienic valving for future centralized CIP set compatibility
  • Upgrade and upsizing of High and Low pressure - steam supply pipework
  • Complete Steam Stress Analysis of the steam pipework to be upgraded and upsized
